What is prediabetes?

Prediabetes is a health condition characterized by blood sugar levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be classified as type 2 diabetes. It serves as a warning sign, indicating a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future. The American Diabetes Association defines the A1C range for prediabetes as being between 5.7% and 6.4%. This range is based on a blood test that measures average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. Unlike type 2 diabetes, prediabetes often has no clear symptoms, making regular screening important, especially for those at higher risk. Some individuals might experience signs similar to diabetes, such as increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, and blurred vision, but these symptoms are typically less pronounced than in full-blown diabetes. Identifying and addressing prediabetes is crucial as it provides an opportunity to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes through lifestyle changes and, in some cases, medication.

How can prediabetes be managed?

Prediabetes can be managed through lifestyle changes, including exercising and weight loss, as well as diet changes. The recommended amount of exericse per week is 30 minutes, five days per week, or 150 minutes in total.
